My master artist for this piece was Vincent Van Gogh, I used his piece Bedroom in Arles, 1889. The current artist that I used for this piece was Jason Naylor, the piece of his that I used was his mural that reads, “Own Your Magic”. This piece corresponds with my inquiry question because of the message that it is meant to send to other people. The person in the piece is trying to bring color into their black-and-white world while telling people to fight for what they believe in, yet at the same time, they are being cased off and suppressed. The idea for this piece is based on when I was out looking at spray-painted graffiti on buildings and thinking how pretty it is yet people don’t always consider it as art when it's being tagged on buildings or other places. The materials that I used for this piece were graphite pencils and colored pencils. I chose to use these materials because the coloration and texture that the graphite pencils create can show depth and a great range of values that I could utilize in making a monochrome grayscale world. The use of colored pencils is meant to be a strong contrast to graphite pencils because of their strong colors that make them stand out against dark and light grays. The process for this piece was something that I had never tried before, I made the same piece in three different media to see how the change in media might change the overall appearance and more importantly the feeling of the piece.
